India’s first high-speed rail corridor between Mumbai and Ahmedabad is witnessing steady progress on civil works, with 427 Km of pier construction completed and 336 Km of girder launching achieved across the project so far, the Ministry of Railways informed Parliament.

In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha on Friday (13 March), Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the 508 Km Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project, which passes through Gujarat, Maharashtra and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, is currently the only high-speed rail project under execution in the country.

According to the data provided by the minister in his reply, pier construction has been completed along the entire 352 Km stretch in Gujarat, marking a key milestone for the elevated high-speed rail alignment.

Girder casting has reached 342 Km, while girder launching — the stage where precast bridge segments are placed on piers — has been completed for 331 Km in the state.

The next stages of infrastructure are also advancing in Gujarat, with track bed construction completed for 152 Km and Overhead Equipment (OHE) mast erection reaching 121 Km along the Gujarat section.

These works represent the transition from heavy civil construction to railway systems installation.

Progress in Maharashtra, where land acquisition challenges earlier slowed the project, is now picking up.

The minister stated that foundation works have reached 84 Km, pier construction 75 Km, girder casting 12 Km, and girder launching 5 Km along the state’s 156 Km portion of the corridor.

Station infrastructure is also advancing on the entire high-speed rail corridor.

Out of the 12 planned stations, foundation works have been completed at eight stations -- Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Anand, Vadodara, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati. In Maharashtra, station works are progressing at Thane, Virar and Boisar, while excavation at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) underground terminal is nearing completion and casting of the base slab has begun.

On the structures side, 17 river bridges have been completed, while work is in advanced stages on four major river bridges in Gujarat --  across the Narmada, Mahi, Tapi and Sabarmati rivers -- and on four bridges in Maharashtra.

Work on the project’s approximately 21 Km under-sea tunnel section between BKC and Shilphata is also underway, with about 4.8 km of tunnelling completed between Ghansoli and Shilphata so far.

The minister noted that the bullet train project is a complex and technology-intensive undertaking, and the exact timeline for completion will depend on progress across civil structures, track installation, electrical systems, signalling, telecommunications and supply of trainsets.
