The National Highways Authority of India has received an overwhelming response for its ambitious Kaliabor to Numaligarh highway project in Assam, with 18 bids submitted for the 85-kilometre section of NH-715 valued at Rs 6,956 crore.

The project is expected to be awarded in the current financial year, marking a significant milestone for infrastructure development in the northeast.

The project, which passes through Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, features an innovative environmental design.

A 34.5-kilometre elevated corridor will allow free and uninterrupted passage of wildlife, addressing longstanding concerns about animal fatalities on the busy route.

The elevated corridor will be implemented in three sections of 18.3 kilometres, 11.2 kilometres and five kilometres.

The comprehensive infrastructure upgrade includes transforming the existing two-lane highway into a four-lane configuration.

The project encompasses two greenfield bypasses spanning 21 kilometres at Jakhlabandha and Bokakhat, one major bridge, 20 minor bridges, seven flyovers, 84 culverts, one railway over bridge, five vehicular underpasses and 16 kilometres of service roads.

NHAI consulted multiple wildlife authorities to align the project with conservation requirements.

The authority consulted the Wildlife Institute of India, National Tiger Conservation Authority and Assam Forest Department, and received approvals from the National Board of Wildlife.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs had approved the project and the foundation ceremony was performed by the Prime Minister in January 2026.

Upon completion, the highway is expected to strengthen regional connectivity significantly.

The Kaliabor-Numaligarh section will play a pivotal role in regional economic growth, strengthening connectivity between major tourism, industrial and economic centres, boosting tourism to Kaziranga National Park, and opening new avenues for trade and industrial development in Assam.
