Bhandup railway station flyover

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will seek technical guidance from IIT Bombay to evaluate the sharp-curve design of a flyover under construction near Bhandup railway station, The Free Press Journal reported.

A special traffic simulation study has also been ordered to assess vehicular movement patterns in the area.

The 530-metre flyover is designed to serve as a direct link between Bhandup East and West, two areas that currently lack a direct east-west road connection, compelling residents to travel lengthy detours.

Despite the work order being issued in October 2023 and construction commencing in 2024, only 30 per cent of the project has been completed to date.

The BMC is targeting completion by 31 January, 2027.

Additional Commissioner Abhijit Bangar carried out an on-site inspection of the project on Friday (6 March), reviewing progress and issuing directions to engineers and officials on the ground.

A civic official provided an update on construction progress: "On the west side, the pillar foundation and pile cap work has been completed, along with girder installation between spans 1 and 4. On the east side, piling for pillars 6 and 7 has also been completed. The fabrication of steel girders, to be installed within the railway limits, is currently underway at a factory in Ambala."

On the eastern side, underground water pipelines of 600 mm and 900 mm diameter are obstructing foundation work.

The Hydraulic Engineering Department has initiated the process of relocating these pipelines.

Bangar also directed that acquisition of salt pan land needed for the 27.45-metre road alignment will be handled through the Development Planning Department.

The official outlined the broader benefit of the project: "The flyover aims to directly link Bhandup East and West, reduce traffic congestion, shorten travel time, and ease pressure on the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road and other arterial routes. At present, many commuters travel nearly 5 km to move from east to west in the area. The new flyover is expected to cut travel time by almost half."
