State-owned gas utility GAIL (India) Limited has approved a Rs 1,736.25 crore investment to establish a 178.2 MW greenfield wind power project in Maharashtra.

The board of directors greenlit the proposal on 27 February, marking a significant expansion of the company's renewable energy portfolio as it pursues net-zero carbon emissions by 2035.

The project will involve an estimated investment of Rs 1,736.25 crore and is expected to be completed within 24 months from the award of the LSTK (Lump Sum Turnkey) contract.

The company plans to finance the project through a mix of debt and equity. The new capacity represents a substantial boost to GAIL's clean energy ambitions in India's renewable energy sector.

Currently, GAIL operates 117.95 MW of renewable energy capacity, which is running at full utilisation. The addition of 178.2 MW will significantly strengthen the company's clean energy footprint and enhance its long-term sustainability profile.

The Maharashtra wind farm will more than double the company's existing wind power capacity, positioning GAIL as a major player in India's energy transition.

The investment forms part of GAIL's broader strategy to increase its renewable energy capacity to 3.4 GW by 2035.

The firm also has 27 MW of solar energy projects spread across Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

Its wind power projects are in Gujarat (19.2 MW), Karnataka (38.1 MW) and Tamil Nadu (60.65 MW). The project to generate electricity from wind is part of a broader effort to boost renewable capacity and meet net-zero carbon emission targets by 2035.

GAIL's pivot towards renewable energy comes as India accelerates its transition to cleaner power sources.

GAIL is India's largest natural gas transmission and marketing company. It owns and operates an extensive network of about 18,001 km of natural gas pipelines, spanning the length and breadth of India.

The company's commitment to renewable energy aligns with the government's push towards sustainable energy solutions and reducing carbon emissions across the energy sector.
