The Government of Gujarat has placed an order for 34 new metro train sets to strengthen urban rail connectivity in the state, with 10 sets earmarked for Ahmedabad Metro Phase II and 24 for the upcoming Surat Metro.

The trains will be manufactured at the advanced production facility of Titagarh Rail Systems in Kolkata.

The Ahmedabad Metro network has steadily expanded over the past few years, with Phase-1 and Phase-2 projects already operational.

These systems were originally envisioned during the tenure of Narendra Modi as Chief Minister of Gujarat, when metro rail projects for Ahmedabad and Surat were first conceptualised.

At present, a 68.2 km network connecting Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar is operational, with 32 train sets already in service.

The addition of 10 new trains is expected to increase service frequency and reduce waiting times for passengers travelling along the busy corridor.

Meanwhile, construction of the 40.3 km Surat Metro system is progressing rapidly.

Overall, Gujarat’s metro rail network currently spans around 108 km and is projected to grow to approximately 190 km in the coming years. The expansion plan includes a proposed airport connectivity line and potential metro projects in cities such as Rajkot and Vadodara.

The new trains will incorporate advanced technologies, including automated operations, real-time monitoring systems, intelligent braking and enhanced passenger safety features such as CCTV surveillance and fire detection systems.
