Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarter in Mumbai.

Nearly four years after the BMC's elected body lost its tenure, the newly constituted civic body will hold its first standing committee meeting on Friday, placing 59 development proposals cumulatively worth Rs 2,800 crore before the statutory panel for financial clearance, The Free Press Journal reported.

The meeting marks a significant shift in Mumbai's civic governance, as all project decisions during the intervening period were handled exclusively by a state-appointed administrator who held complete authority over civic proposals.

The last elected body's term had ended on 7 March 2022.

Among the notable proposals up for review is the construction of Mumbai's first gymkhana, to be built opposite the BMC headquarters in South Mumbai at an estimated cost of Rs 44 crore.

The facility is designed to include a viewing deck, an indoor gymnasium and swimming pools, with a three-year completion timeline.

A proposal concerning the Sion bridge, which serves as a key link between South Mumbai and the city's suburban areas, is also on the agenda. The project's estimated cost has risen from Rs 26.28 crore to Rs 31.62 crore, attributed to the inclusion of additional steel girders and approach roads.

The BMC is targeting an opening date of 15 July if the proposal receives approval.

Structural repair work at the Borivali Hill water reservoir, pegged at Rs 23 crore, will also come up for consideration.

On the water supply front, the committee will examine a Rs 10.44 crore proposal to procure 25 tankers, each with a 10,000-litre capacity, intended for emergency deployment during pipeline failures or supply disruptions.

Ancillary civic works in Kurla, Chandivali, Malabar Hill and Nepean Sea Road, valued at Rs 30 crore and Rs 26 crore respectively, are also listed for approval at the meeting.
