Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's son Nishant Kumar is poised to make his formal political debut, with strong indications that he will be fielded as the Janata Dal (United)'s candidate for the Rajya Sabha.

The party has also decided to retain Ramnath Thakur in the Upper House.

The buzz around Nishant's political entry gained definitive shape on Tuesday after JDU leader and state minister Sharwan Kumar confirmed the development.

"Now, it's clear, and it has been finalised that Nishant Kumar will join active politics. The party will make a formal announcement in a day or two. Party workers have been demanding Nishant's entry into politics for several years. Now party workers and supporters are upbeat with the decision ahead of Holi," he told news agency PTI.

Sharwan Kumar added that Nishant would be handed a "bigger responsibility" within the party, with details expected to follow shortly. On the possibility of a Rajya Sabha berth for the CM's son, he kept the door open, saying, "Anything can happen."

Talk of Nishant stepping into public life has been building steadily since the BJP-led NDA swept the 2025 Bihar assembly elections with a commanding majority.

Back in December 2025, JDU working president Sanjay Jha, speaking with Nishant by his side, had signalled the party's eagerness to bring him on board.

"The party people, the well-wishers of the party, the supporters of the party, and everyone in the party want Nishant ji to come and work for the party. All of us want it. Now he has to decide. He has to decide when he will take a decision and work in the party," Jha had told reporters.

With an official announcement expected within days, Nishant's elevation to the Rajya Sabha would mark a significant moment for both the JDU and Bihar's political landscape.
