The Government of Telangana has outlined the first phase of the Musi Riverfront Development Project, with an estimated investment of Rs 6,500 crore to Rs 7,000 crore.

Officials presented the detailed plan during a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy.

The presentation was delivered by EV Narasimha Reddy, Managing Director of the Musi Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (MRDCL), highlighting the key features and environmental infrastructure proposed under Phase-1.

A consortium comprising Meinhardt Group, RIOS and Cushman & Wakefield has prepared and submitted the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the initial phase.

The plan focuses on two stretches of the river that converge near the proposed Gandhi Sarovar reservoir at Bapu Ghat, which will serve as a central landmark within the redevelopment zone.

One of the major features of the project is a special grey water management system designed to reuse treated wastewater generated across the city.

According to the plan, three large balancing reservoirs will be built within the Musi river buffer zone near major sewage treatment plants located at Attapur, Amberpet and Nagole. These reservoirs will store treated water and regulate its distribution.

Authorities have also proposed constructing a ring bund along the Outer Ring Road corridor, enabling the treated grey water to be reused for landscaping, irrigation, construction activities and industrial purposes.

This system is expected to support sustainable water management while reducing pressure on freshwater resources.

The riverfront development itself will include approach roads, cycling tracks, landscaped parks, pedestrian spaces and open recreational areas, creating an accessible public waterfront.

The Gandhi Sarovar master plan further proposes several cultural and educational facilities, including a Statue of Peace, a handloom training centre, a knowledge and education hub, public recreation zones, a meditation and wellness village, and a national museum.
