West Asia Crisis Hits Bengaluru's Kitchens: BJP MP Tejasvi Surya Flags LPG Shortage To Petroleum Minister
The ripple effects of the West Asia conflict have reached Bengaluru's hospitality sector, with commercial LPG supplies running thin and several restaurants facing operational disruptions, the Hindustan Times reported.
BJP MP from Bengaluru South, Tejasvi Surya, has written to Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri, urging uninterrupted gas supply to hotels and eateries.
Surya took up the matter after receiving representations from the Bangalore Hotels Association. "The reports of a shortage of LPG cylinders and its possible disruption to the hotel industry have been communicated to Hon. Minister Shri @HardeepSPuri Ji. The Minister has constituted a high priority panel to ensure LPG supply is uninterrupted to non-domestic users, including hotels," Surya wrote on X.
In his letter, the MP underlined the sector's dependence on commercial gas supply. "I am in receipt of representation from the Bangalore Hotels Association (Regd.) regarding concerns related to the continuity of commercial LPG supply to restaurants, hotels and other establishments in the hospitality sector. The restaurant and food service industry relies significantly on commercial LPG for daily kitchen operations. Unlike several other sectors, most commercial kitchens currently do not have immediate alternatives such as PNG connectivity or electric cooking systems at scale," he wrote.
The letter also warned of broader consequences, noting that any supply disruption could hurt restaurant operations, employment and consumer services.
The Association further sought assurances that commercial establishments would continue receiving gas through existing distribution channels, even as the government prioritises household supply.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has directed oil refineries to ramp up LPG production, channelling additional output toward domestic households amid the global supply crunch.
"In light of current geopolitical disruptions to fuel supply and constraints on the supply of LPG, the Ministry has issued orders to oil refineries for higher LPG production and using such extra production for domestic LPG use," the ministry posted on X.
To curb hoarding, a 25-day inter-booking period for consumers has also been introduced.
