Prime Minister Narendra Modi today (12 March) unveiled development projects worth over Rs 4,570 crore in Assam's Kokrajhar district and flagged off three new train services aimed at boosting connectivity across India's Northeast.

The Prime Minister conducted the ceremonies virtually from Guwahati after heavy rain prevented his planned visit to Kokrajhar, located in the Bodoland Territorial Region.

The three new railway services include the Kamakhya-Charlapalli Amrit Bharat Express, which will provide direct connectivity between the Northeast and southern India, the Guwahati-New Jalpaiguri Express enhancing links with West Bengal, and the Narangi-Agartala Express connecting Assam with Tripura.

PM Modi also laid the foundation stone for a Periodic Overhauling Workshop at Bashbari in Kokrajhar district, designed to strengthen railway maintenance infrastructure and create employment opportunities in the region.

The Prime Minister performed the Bhoomi Poojan for Assam Mala 3.0, a major road infrastructure initiative worth over Rs 3,200 crore.

Under this scheme, more than 900 kilometres of roads will be constructed across Assam to improve inter-state connectivity and strengthen linkages between national highways and rural areas.

Additionally, he launched six road infrastructure projects in the Bodoland Territorial Council area, including four flyovers and two bridges worth around Rs 1,100 crore, which are expected to reduce traffic congestion and improve access to tourism, healthcare and agricultural markets.

The development comes as Assam prepares for assembly elections expected in mid-April 2026, with the current legislative assembly's term ending on 20 May.

PM Modi's two-day visit to Assam encompasses programmes across Kokrajhar, Guwahati and Silchar, with the Prime Minister set to launch development projects collectively valued at more than Rs 47,600 crore throughout the state.
