The Maharashtra Cabinet Infrastructure Committee on Tuesday (27 January) approved a 35-km Metro project to connect Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai with the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, with an estimated cost exceeding Rs 22,000 crore.

The Metro Line 8 corridor will have 20 stations, comprising six underground and 14 elevated stations.

According to a release from the Chief Minister’s Office, land acquisition for the project will cover 30.7 hectares and is expected to cost Rs 388 crore.

The high-powered infrastructure committee cleared the project at an estimated cost of Rs 22,862 crore.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directed that all land acquisition and statutory approvals for the Metro line be completed within six months.

He also instructed that construction should be finished within three years of receiving the necessary approvals.

Of the total 35 km alignment, 9.25 km will be underground, running from Mumbai Airport Terminal 2 to Ghatkopar East.

The remaining 24.63 km will be an elevated stretch extending from Ghatkopar West to Navi Mumbai Airport Terminal 2.

Fadnavis also asked departments concerned to expedite the extension of the Samruddhi Expressway on the Nagpur–Gondia and Bhandara–Gadchiroli routes, stressing that delays in key infrastructure projects should be avoided.

Keeping in view the upcoming Kumbh Mela, the committee approved the Nashik city ring road project, which will span 66.15 km and entail an estimated expenditure of Rs 3,954 crore.

In addition, the panel cleared the upgradation of the 85.76-km Navegaon More–Konsari–Mulchera–Hedri–Surjagad highway in Gadchiroli district into a four-lane cement concrete road.
