The United States is dispatching two senior officials to India this week in an effort to inject fresh momentum into the political, strategic and trade pillars of the bilateral relationship.

The outreach follows recent American tariff decisions and President Donald Trump’s renewed engagement with Pakistan, developments that have added a layer of sensitivity to diplomatic exchanges between New Delhi and Washington.

Allison Hooker, the US undersecretary of state for political affairs, will hold discussions with top Indian officials in New Delhi.

According to a statement issued by Washington, her visit will focus on regional security assessments, economic cooperation and shared Indo-Pacific priorities.

Hooker will also travel to Bengaluru, where she is expected to visit the Indian Space Research Organisation.

The US statement said she will use the opportunity to highlight innovation and scientific collaboration, particularly in the context of expanding research partnerships between the two nations.

Alongside this diplomatic engagement, India and the United States will launch three days of negotiations on the initial phase of their proposed bilateral trade agreement.

The talks, beginning on 10 December and running through 12 December, will be led on the American side by Deputy United States Trade Representative Rick Switzer.

A person familiar with the preparations noted in an Economic Times report that “The three-day talks will start on December 10. It will conclude on December 12. It is not a formal round of talks,” indicating that the discussions are intended to narrow outstanding issues before a more structured negotiation.

Both sides are aiming to finalise the first tranche of the trade pact before the end of December.
