The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has launched an extensive drive to remove accumulated waste along railway tracks across the national capital, as part of a broader effort to address legacy garbage and improve sanitation in areas adjoining rail corridors.
A Hindustan Times report stated that around 5,000 metric tonnes of waste have already been cleared from trackside areas in Delhi, while an estimated 10,000 metric tonnes still remain to be removed.
MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar said the civic body has prepared a structured strategy to tackle the problem.
“Considering the long stretch of tracks and security concerns of its personnel, MCD has prepared a comprehensive plan to remove the legacy waste from the railway tracks,” he was quoted as saying.
The clean-up operation involves a large workforce and heavy machinery. Officials said the corporation has deployed around 145 vehicles, including trucks, Hyvas, JCB machines and auto-tippers, along with approximately 800 sanitation workers to carry out the task.
Authorities noted that the railway tracks within the capital witness high-density train movement, which means cleaning operations must be coordinated with railway authorities.
“The railway tracks in the NCT see high density traffic and therefore blocks are required from the railways while cleaning the surrounding area,” an official was also quoted as saying by HT.
In several locations, particularly narrow or restricted stretches, municipal vehicles are unable to access the tracks directly. To overcome this challenge, the MCD is working closely with railway officials through joint coordination teams operating at the zonal level.
The civic body aims to clear the remaining legacy waste within the next 10 days, after which a regular maintenance and cleaning mechanism will be introduced to prevent garbage from accumulating again.
Officials added that tenders will soon be floated to appoint concessionaires responsible for zone-wise track cleaning.
The corporation is also considering public awareness campaigns led by councillors in neighbourhoods near railway lines to discourage residents from dumping waste along the tracks.
