The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved the construction of a four‑lane bridge over the Ganga river along with approach roads to connect TransGanga City with Kanpur city.
The decision was taken during the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on 10 March 2026.
The bridge will be developed as a major connectivity corridor linking the upcoming TransGanga City township with Kanpur.
TransGanga City is being developed by the Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA) to relocate industrial units from Kanpur city and surrounding areas.
According to the cabinet decision note, the project has been cleared with an estimated cost of Rs 753.13 crore.
Out of this, Rs 460 crore will be provided with cabinet approval while the remaining expenditure will be met through the resources of the development authority.
According to the note, once TransGanga City becomes operational, movement of both heavy and light vehicles across the Ganga is expected to increase significantly.
At present, traffic largely depends on the existing Ganga barrage route, which could face severe congestion as industrial and urban activity expands in the region.
To address this expected rise in traffic, the cabinet approved construction of a four‑lane crossing.
Instead of constructing a single four‑lane structure, the plan provides for two separate two‑lane bridges so that traffic can be distributed more evenly and congestion at the merging point within Kanpur city can be avoided.
The new bridge and its approach infrastructure are expected to ease connectivity between Kanpur and the TransGanga industrial township while supporting planned industrial relocation and future urban growth along the Ganga corridor.
