The Central Bureau of Investigation has issued a fresh summons to actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief Vijay, asking him to appear at its Delhi headquarters on 15 March in connection with the Karur stampede case, officials said on Tuesday (10 March).
The agency had previously questioned Vijay twice in January. A summons was also issued for 9 March, but Vijay sought a 15-day deferral, citing political commitments ahead of the Tamil Nadu assembly elections.
He had also requested that the questioning be held in Chennai or another location within Tamil Nadu.
The CBI, however, has directed him to appear in Delhi as scheduled on 15 March.
DMK MLA from Karur, Senthil Balaji, has separately been asked to appear before the agency on 17 March.
The former state minister posted on X in Tamil confirming his intention to comply and said he would offer clarification regarding the Karur stampede tragedy.
The CBI took over the investigation from a Special Investigation Team following a Supreme Court directive. The case stems from a stampede on 27 September 2025, at a rally organised by Vijay in Karur, which left 41 people dead and over 60 injured.
According to the Hindustan Times, the Supreme Court had in October last year directed the CBI director to assign a senior officer to lead the probe and set up a supervisory committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Ajay Rastogi to oversee the investigation.
A bench of Justices J K Maheshwari and N V Anjaria had underlined the gravity of the case, stating that "the faith and trust of the general public in the process of investigation must be restored in the criminal justice system, and one way to instil such trust is by ensuring that the investigation in the present case is completely impartial, independent and unbiased."
