The Central Government has approved Rs 368 crore for a two-lane national highway connecting Jilugumilli in Eluru district to Kovvur in East Godavari district, aimed at improving access to the Polavaram project region and surrounding areas.

The highway, designated as National Highway 365BB, will span 86.7 kilometres and is expected to strengthen road connectivity between Telangana, North Andhra and several key parts of Andhra Pradesh.

A stretch of nearly 30 kilometres of new double-lane road is being built along the Akhanda Godavari in the Kovvur division of East Godavari district.

The alignment runs alongside the river, offering scenic views while serving practical connectivity needs for the region.

The road will improve access to the Polavaram Project, located around 30 km from Kovvur, as well as the Pattiseema pilgrim centre, situated approximately 25 km away.

The highway originates at NH-316 near Jilugumilli and passes through Buttayagudem, Kannapuram, LND Peta, Sagipadu, Dondapudi, Pattiseema and Tallapudi before joining NH-16 at Kovvur.

The project is divided into two phases, with the first covering 40.4 km and the second covering 46.3 km.

The same contractor executing the Devarapalli-Khammam Greenfield Highway has been assigned the work. Construction is currently underway at a steady pace.

Once complete, the highway is expected to serve nearly 100 agency villages and 30 plain area settlements, while also reducing travel distance between Hyderabad and Rajamahendravaram and providing a faster corridor to the Polavaram project site.

Kovvur RDO M Raja Ramesh Premkumar said approximately 175 acres of land are required for the project, of which nearly 70 percent has been acquired, and that a meeting with landowners was convened to facilitate the handover of remaining land to the government.
