The Union Cabinet has approved a proposal to upgrade Madurai Airport to international status.

The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and comes ahead of his visit to the state.

Officials said the move reflects the long-standing aspirations of people in the region to expand global air links from the historic temple city.

Briefing reporters on the Cabinet decision, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw said the policy step would enable direct international air connectivity to Madurai.

He noted that the region hosts a sizeable industrial base and serves as an important centre for education and healthcare in Tamil Nadu.

Airport director P Muthu Kumar said the upgrade will allow airlines to expand operations and introduce more international routes.

According to him, the designation will help attract foreign carriers, offer passengers a wider choice of destinations and encourage competitive pricing for international travel.

“Airlines can also plan bases at Madurai airport. This will also enable effective use of airport infrastructure and resources,” he said.

Officials added that several airlines have already expressed interest in launching international services from the airport once the upgrade is implemented. The airport also offers night parking facilities, which could support expanded airline operations.

Managed by the Airports Authority of India, Madurai airport is among the oldest aviation facilities in the state.

Plans are already under consideration to expand the existing terminal building, apron areas, car parking and other infrastructure to accommodate rising passenger traffic.

The international status is expected to benefit tourism and pilgrimage travel as well.

The airport provides access to several major religious destinations, including the Meenakshi Amman Temple, Koodal Azhagar Temple, Thirupparankundram Murugan Temple, Palamudhircholai Murugan Temple and Rameswaram.
