Assembly Elections In Tamil Nadu, Keralam, Assam, West Bengal And Puducherry From 9–29 April: Here's What You Need To Know

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday (15 March) announced the schedule for the 2026 legislative assembly elections across several states and one Union Territory.

The polls will be held in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, West Bengal and the Union Territory of Puducherry, with the counting of votes scheduled for 4 May.

The schedule was unveiled during a press conference in New Delhi, where officials outlined the key dates for the electoral process, including the timeline for notifications, nominations and polling.

With the announcement, the Model Code of Conduct has come into immediate effect in the poll-bound regions.

Keralam, Assam And Puducherry Poll Dates

For Keralam, Assam and Puducherry, voting will be conducted in a single phase on 9 April for their 140-member, 126-member and 30-member assemblies, respectively.

The key dates for these elections are:

  • Issue of notification: 16 March

  • Last date for nominations: 23 March

  • Scrutiny of nominations: 24 March

  • Withdrawal of candidature: 26 March

  • Polling day: 9 April

  • Counting: 4 May

Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections

In Tamil Nadu, polling will be conducted in a single phase on 23 April, with voters electing representatives to the 234-member legislative assembly.

The electoral process will follow the standard sequence of events set by the commission:

  • Issue of notification: 30 March

  • Last date for filing nominations: 6 April

  • Scrutiny of nominations: 7 April

  • Last date for withdrawal of candidature: 9 April

  • Date of polling: 23 April

  • Counting of votes: 4 May

The announcement formally initiates the election process in the state, where political parties are expected to intensify campaigning in the coming weeks.

West Bengal Elections In Two Phases

The election in West Bengal will be conducted in two phases. Voting will take place on:

  • Phase 1: 23 April

  • Phase 2: 29 April

The state will elect representatives to the 294-member legislative assembly, with the term of the current assembly scheduled to conclude on 7 May.

Counting And Results

Across all five regions, counting of votes will take place on 4 May , when the results will determine the composition of new governments in the states and the Union Territory.
