The Kerala Cabinet has approved the allocation of 180 acres of land free of cost to BrahMos Aerospace Thiruvananthapuram Limited at Kallikkad village in Kattakkada taluk of Thiruvananthapuram district.
The land allocation follows the Supreme Court's approval in December last year, which permitted the Kerala government to transfer 257 acres from the Nettukaltheri open prison campus.
BrahMos Aerospace Trivandrum Limited will receive 180 acres for its expansion, whilst the remaining land will accommodate the Sashastra Seema Bal headquarters and a National Forensic Science University campus.
The expansion aims to establish a second manufacturing unit dedicated to advanced missiles and strategic hardware. BrahMos Aerospace currently operates from a 15.8-acre facility in Chackai, which produces missile integration systems and is the country's only facility manufacturing small turbine fan engines for missiles. The Chackai unit also supplies components to ISRO, BARC and the Kalpakkam Nuclear Facility.
Kerala had argued to the Supreme Court that providing land to BrahMos Aerospace Trivandrum Limited, which operates under the Defence Research and Development Organisation, would contribute directly to national security and defence growth.
The state government emphasised that the establishment would offer employment opportunities and strengthen local development whilst ensuring the permanent presence of central defence infrastructure in the capital city.
The development is also likely to now allow for the expansion of the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, which has been held up for some time now. One of the reasons cited was the need to acquire a 22 acre land parcel held by Brahmos Aerospace.
