Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate Micron Technology's Semiconductor Assembly, Test and Packaging facility in Sanand, Gujarat, today (28 February), marking a transformative milestone in India's technology ecosystem.

The event signifies the commencement of commercial production and shipment of the first Made-in-India semiconductor memory modules, positioning India as a key player in the global semiconductor value chain.

The Sanand facility represents a total investment exceeding Rs 22,500 crore, making it the first proposal approved under the India Semiconductor Mission.

Construction commenced following its groundbreaking ceremony in September 2023, demonstrating the government's commitment to fast-tracking strategic semiconductor investments. Union Minister of Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw will attend the inauguration ceremony.

The facility features nearly 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space, ranking amongst the world's largest raised-floor cleanrooms.

Micron's CEO Sanjay Mehrotra noted the cleanroom required three-and-a-half times the steel used in the Eiffel Tower and concrete equivalent to 100 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

The advanced facility will convert DRAM and NAND semiconductor wafers from Micron's global manufacturing network into finished memory and storage products for international markets.

The plant is designed to manufacture solid-state drive storage devices, as well as DRAM and NAND products, catering to the rising demand for memory solutions in artificial intelligence and high-performance computing sectors.

The facility currently employs around 2,000 people, with plans to create 5,000 direct jobs, strengthening India's emergence as a competitive destination for semiconductor manufacturing.
