Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Silchar on 14 March to lay the foundation stone of the Shillong-Silchar Greenfield High-Speed Corridor, a major road infrastructure project aimed at transforming connectivity across Northeast India, The Sentinel reported.
Modi arrives in Assam a day earlier, on 13 March, as part of a two-day visit to the region.
The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) has begun inviting bids following central government clearance, with tenders recently floated for Package 4 of the project, a 31-km stretch from Mawlyngkhung near Shillong in Meghalaya to Panchgram near Silchar in Assam.
The estimated cost for this package alone is Rs 2,206.55 crore. Tenders for two other packages had been invited earlier.
The full corridor stretches 166.80 km from Mawlyngkhung in Meghalaya to Panchgram in Assam, divided into four packages.
Of the total length, 144.80 km falls within Meghalaya and the remaining 22 km within Assam.
The project will be executed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode at a total capital cost of Rs 22,864 crore.
The new greenfield alignment addresses the significant limitations of the existing NH-06, a two-lane road with a paved shoulder that faces chronic congestion and urban traffic pressure.
The corridor will also connect with NH-27, NH-106, NH-206 and NH-37, improving access to several towns across the two states.
Silchar's position as the primary entry point to Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura gives this corridor wider regional significance.
Once operational, the highway is expected to reduce travel time and freight costs between Guwahati, Shillong, Silchar, Imphal, Aizawl and Agartala.
NHIDCL has noted that the project supports the Atmanirbhar Bharat framework, with anticipated benefits including local job creation and socio-economic growth across the five states the corridor connects.
